I suggest you do a Google image search for "origami sheep" and "origami dog," and note the differences. Yes, you'll find a wide variety of styles and configurations, but it's obvious that a sheep is a sheep and a dog is a dog.
It's the same as seeing the famous Japanese origami crane and saying "I think it's a swan." Um, NO - it was established centuries ago that that particular folded configuration is a crane. Period. |

It's a sheep.
It serves as an ambiguous symbol in the movie.
On the one hand it's a direct insult til Gosling in the situation saying he's a sheep (another mindless replicant in the flock).
On the other hand and on a higher symbolic level it's part of an underlying Christian allegory in the movie, where Deckard represents the sheep dog that cares for the flock, and thus also serves as a father figure for Gosling. Hereby the God/Christ symbolism of the original movie is continued.

I still think its Deckard`s dog. I`m coming from the angle that Gaff is a replicant and was/is helping Deckard. Still have to see it again to get the context right.
The origami in 2049 is about Deckard and made for Deckard so to speak just like his other three were. Apart from the nose, the 2049 origami looks just like Deckards dog with its puffy mane chest, tail between legs and hang down ears and is also a bridge for his reveal later in the film. _________________ Formerly offworld66 |

I agree that it's a sheep. Really like your interpretation, here, Buch.
I also thought that it may have been a nod to the original novel, here.

What made you think it was Deckards dog @preciousphotos?
Theres got to be more to bringing back one of the most iconic characters from the original for a very brief time just to pull out some feeble reference to the source material or some obscure religious symbiosis. This film was meticulously crafted. _________________ Formerly offworld66 |

Ladies & gents,
Could the origami sheep be a reference to the book "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep"?

Feeble and obscure, Tim?
I think you should contribute with your own interpretation then, instead of just criticizing mine
Maybe we're supposed to feel unsure whether the origami figure is in fact a sheep or a dog. _________________ Monsieur, azonnal kövessen engem bitte |

Theres nothing personal there Anders, to me if the whole Gaff thing was just a nod to PKD then it was feeble and lessens the impact of the original. That`s on the makers.
If I see a dog and not a sheep then the religious angle would seem obscure and not resonate with me yes? I`m not sure how that is criticising you.
Anyway, contributing is what I`m trying to do. As far as BR 2049 is concerned since it was all announced I`ve made three calls here and on therpf. First was JJ Abrams would direct.
Second was Rachel being special and given a reproductive system and the last was the Gaff replicant thing.
Just trying to find out if its two outta three as I didnt come away from 2049 with a clear answer. _________________ Formerly offworld66 |

Something I found interesting to note is what Gaff tells K in this scene.
To me his answers come across as clues that strongly hint that he thinks Deckard is a replicant.
"He wasn't long for this world"
Allusions to an incept date?
"Something in his eyes"
Even if just out of focus and in the background?
Even going so far as to use the loaded word 'retired'...
In regards to the origami, other than the obvious connection to DADOES-
when we first see Gaff make the chicken in Bryant's office it can be said to be a provocation.
That sheep could very well be his provocation of K as others here have noted. _________________ "To show you... that you aren't alone. I am here with you and always will be. Go and do your task, even though you know it's wrong" |

For whatever it's worth, I thought it was a sheep. I found Gaff's remarks sort of odd, as well. As you note, "retired" is a loaded word, not something he'd just throw out there. Does he actually think Deckard is dead, or is he covering for him?
I hope the DVD/Blu-Ray release is loaded with commentary tracks, so we can get as many answers to these sorts of questions as possible. |

Well, Deckard has Gaff's spinner. I have to believe that there was some collusion, there. |

Really? That's pretty cool! I'm going to try to catch an IMAX showing of the film this week, I'll remember to keep an eye out for that. It's got identifying marks on it? |

Yes, Number 44. Look for it right after K busts through the wall. |
