You should never ever "varnish" wood. Stain, oil, wax, anything but varnish or shellack. Wink

The use of varnish basically is plastic coating an organic material, and it tends to discolor over time, and can not easily be removed. Wood should always stay as close to raw as possible. A little bit of oil would bring out the color of the wood just fine.

Tomenosuke probably discovered, as I did, that making these stands out of acrylic is a PITA since the minor changes in material thickness have a big impact on the fit of the assembly. The walnut plywood is more consistent.

My only problem with the stands is a conceptual one, in the world of Blade Runner trees are basically non-existent. So a hard wood display stand would be a little out of place.

Have you considered designing the joints something along these lines:

If you set the nominal distance between the crests of the "bumps" at just a hair narrower than the acrylic sheet tolerance span's minimum thickness, I would imagine you ought to have a design that is fairly robust against variations in the material thickness.
