Now I need to do some too. These are hands down the most awesome grips I've ever seen. Done the oldschool way.

Didn't want to be hunched over all day checkering again, so I started work on some 3D stuff. I took one of the restoration photos, and corrected for lens distortion and perspective as much as I could in Photoshop. Then I imported it as a reference canvas into Fusion & scaled off the 1 inch work-mat squares.

I really want to work off the original prop as much as I can, as opposed to poaching my kits (I want to build those, not scavenge them lol). The idea here is to have these (once I'm done) machined with the intent of all the final shaping and sanding being done along with the grips to ensure a perfect fit.

Question: Do you sleep?
Question: Are you a machine?
Question: Why so much beauty and not enough time?

You're going all the way here veektohr! Love the amount of research and work you're doing to achieve that prop! Cool

Looks like a great rendering. I'm just getting started
with Fusion 360 , after having BobCad all this time.
I think I'm going to like it.

Fusion is my first real experience with any kind of CAD since playing around on my dad's AutoCAD in the 90s. I think I got the turtle to draw a circle once... I really like it so far! Also, it's free, which is a huge bonus.

The learning curve has been pretty ok so far for geometric type shapes. Sculpting organic stuff is still really hard for me in the computer, which is why I'm still doing the grips themselves by hand. I just have much more practice shaping things that way. Hopefully I'll get up to speed by the time I try to tackle the cylinder covers Shocked Of course I could always try those by hand, too, but that seems a little intense.

Just acquired some pretty slick reference to base my final grips/gripframe off of Shocked

In a way... they're a color test made from the original molds during pre-production. At one point they did a set with pearloid resin before deciding on the amber

I think I'm gonna scan them up, reverse engineer the grip frame from them, and find a CNC to churn a couple of sets out Smile

That's a pretty incredible addition to a blade runner collection. NICE SCORE!

You bet! I'm making it my mission to try and put together a definitive set of grips. I think I'll also have to do the grip frame to make sure everything lines up, but I was gonna do that anyway. Should make for a pretty cool little upgrade kit!

Hopefully, the shrinkage on those is at a minimum Wink

I'd love to have a 'definitive' grip and frame set, just to display next to my completed guns. The story behind them would be worth it alone.

Lol, I had a dream last night that they arrived and were only quarter scale.

Their provenance says that they are from the production molds, so any shrinkage from the masters would theoretically be the same as whatever ended up on the blaster itself.

There are definitely cracks in them, so direct casting will be too risky. I think scanning, repairing in the computer, and then either CNCing a new master, or just straight-up cutting them out of cast acrylic will be the way to go.

Once I have them in hand, we'll have a better idea for how much work will need to be done to get this going.

I will keep that in mind! I am only just learning how to use one, and I have to drive an hour each way to get time on it... not the most efficient or reliable workflow. Let's stay in touch Smile
