I didn't mention it before because I didn't know if they were displaying them yet - the Vid-Phon consignor also had in their possession some original Syd Mead concept sketches of the Vid-Phon, a large wall Esper unit, and a misc. keycard kiosk. All were clearly Syd's work and never published before, either in the BR sketchbook or his books.

If you look in the photos you'll see one on display, on the shelf above the Vid-Phon. You'll definitely want to grab their catalog when it comes out. I was stunned when I saw them. They were just in an envelope. For 25 years.

Tested.com shot some video of the Vid-Phon, the Syd Mead concept art for the Vid-Phon, and some of the other stuff the PropStore had there.

Holy Cow Cool

What else is still out there I wonder. Starting to think the story about SRS having props destroyed at the end of filming is a myth.

Next item I want to turn up is the complete ESPER machine, Oh its out there.

The one instance we know about for sure are all the background versions of The sedan and spinners from set. He didn't want them ending up in other movies, but a few of each were spared. As far as the props, most of the ones that survived where the heroes for sure, and any the staff grabbed themselves at the end. But, it does look like much of the hand props did survive, but only a few were accounted for. It seems he only wanted to protect the iconic stuff from ending up in other films and blurring the film realities, as his idol Kubrik had done in 2001. we would need to talk to him directly to be sure, but it certainly seems he tried to be careful the mass of stuff didn't end up in the prop warehouses to be used over and over again, but instead into private hands and even museums. The single vehicles did still make some cameos in other films though. Just not as integral parts of those films, just background pieces for the most part.

Well that's cool.

Isn't there some interview with either Ridley or Mead talking about the Mead gun design starting as a phone design or the other way around? This must be that drawing!

There's another piece of concept art showing a desk phone that has similar shapes.

Yeah, the gun is like a mish mash of these two phone designs.

Mead did have certain shapes and design concepts he liked to use throughout his entire body of work.
