I have begun the printing of my G.I. Joe / Starsky and Hutch Spinner Project. So far, I have only done 3 parts of the bottom section. I am printing on a Projet 1500 printer, which uses a UV develop resin. The resolution is fair to good, depending on the part's orientation on the build platform. Part surfaces that are parallel to the resin tray develop without print lines. Angled and curvilinear surfaces, with respect to the platform, do show print lines at a resolution of 1024 x 768 on the XY and 0.004in. on the Z axis. For the most part this is sufficient and acceptable after I factor in material cost. I will, however, be doing a great deal of surface putty work and sanding. Due to the bounding box dimensions of this printer vs. the overall size of my model, it was necessary for me to divide up the entire car into printable sizes. I started with the bottom chassis by cutting it up into six sections with mating tabs. Once I have printed the sections for the bottom chassis, I will assemble, clean and prepare it as one complete sub-assembly piece that will later interlock with other consolidated sub-assembly parts. For now I only have the first three sections to show you. I apologize for the rough images. As I complete each of the planned sub-assemblies, I will take more care in documenting them.

This is a great project Rick. Looking forward to it evolving.

I know that large thin walled panels of 3D print have a tendency to warp or move out of shape sometimes due to temperature. Are you planning on putting any structure inside to help prevent twisting when it's all together. I suppose the limits of your bed size may help.

Yes, you are correct about the warping issue. And I am governed by my build platform size, as well as, expense of resin. So, I have to strike a proper balance for each printed part. In the case of the 6 floor panels, the warping is not an issue. There are, however, some dimples and textures that I will have to putty over. I will assemble all printed parts for this spinner into about 5 or 6 sub-assemblies that I will clean, mold, and cast. These cast resin sub-assemblies will be designed in such a way as to interlock with one another and affixed to an internal framework that will allow me to suspend the finished model from the ceiling or wall in such a manner that it will be structurally sound and allow for electrical wiring for lights. That's the plan for now, at least.

I plan to print as many parts as I can for the pattern, supplementing with handmade elements when necessary. The final model will be composed of cast resin and vacuformed parts, though.

That all makes perfect sense. By the sounds of it it's going to be an expensive project if you are printing, moulding and casting.

Agreed. Even I think myself crazy for attempting this project, but I just want a large scale spinner in the room. Even if it takes me the whole year, or two, it will be worth it to me. This is one of a select few studio scale models for which I have a genuine passion.

Here are the printed parts for the bottom chassis panel sub-assembly, and what my budget will allow for now. As you can see, I have a lot of work ahead of me just for this one sub-assembly. I have begun filling imperfections and dimples with JB weld Kwik for now. I have ordered Smooth-on's new XTC-3D for 3D prints. They say it is good for removing print lines and is a self-leveling resin, which I will definitely need for the interior side of this panel. I will let you know how that goes. In the meantime, however, I need to finish two new and one resurrected PKD projects that are long overdue.

Thank you. At the rate I am going with the Projet printer, and the expense of resin, I probably would do better making mine the old fashioned way too. For some parts I will have to do that. I look forward to seeing your ground car finished. I know it will be excellent.

I have assembled the bottom panel for molding. I still need to do some more clean-up on it, but its done for the most part. I will need to print a few separate detail parts for the centerline rear midsection. I lost the printed details in the parts during assembly of the six panel. I also prepped a couple of midsection side panels and the two rear propulsion vents. This will be a long drawn out project for me, since I cannot devote constant time and resources to it, but I will make as much progress as I can. Slow and steady wins the race best, sometimes.
