Getting closer to finishing my Tomenosuke, have been reading the debate as to if the hero blaster was or wasn't blued at the time of filming and have decided that the way I'm going to go with this is to de-seam/polish the parts, key and then progressively tone it down with heavily diluted washes of Birchwood Casey Aluminum black, to get a dull silver finish (not a fan of the black/dark blued finish)
Have seen a lot of these treated with the aluminum black and the results are varied, so looking to see if there were alternatives and found this video on YouTube
Just wondered what peoples thoughts of it was.

From a few of the bluing guides I've read you need to dilute it quite heavily with distilled water for purity.
This is the part I'm dreading as from all the other results I've seen it doesn't seem to be very consistent. |

That's exactly my concern... That the dilution of the bluing fluid will give an uneven finish on the metal... Hmmm....

I find that I use it full strength and get the aluminum barrel fairly black... Then using scotch bright pads scrub it back down to the gray I want.
It does give a uneven finish but by making as much a black as possible then It can be cleaned up to a more even finish as even the lighter parts are now dark enough.
I also use a product called SimiChrome metal polish that also helps blend the coloring. Other metal polish might work.
I also use it on the Pewter after I have wash it with pewter black, and do the same job as above to them

Thanks Rich! That's very helpfull.... Have absolutely zero experience, so need to do my homework well before trying anything "live".
Would it make sence to use steel wool 0000 in the scrubbing down process or is it too rough?

I don't know never used steel wool..should work..
I use red and gray stochbright.
Wear rubber gloves and best in a open air location.

Only problem with steel wool is it can leave an oily residue (probably added to prevent it rusting) ok if your not going to add any more blue but could be a problem if you need to apply more blue.
Rich, got some of that Mothers Mag & Aluminum polish you recommended for polishing the grips, great stuff  |

Buy some red and gray pads.
The mothers polish was a Phasepistol tip I passed along.

| Birchwood is all over the place. I've seen it go brown. I've seen it go gray. I've never got a sense of permenence from it. Like you can always rub it off. |

OK Here is what I am doing and getting:
First just out of the pewter black bath:
Aluminum barrel treated with Casey Aluminum Black, I use a gray scotchbrite pad to rub it in and do three passes letting it dry between each pass.
I then scotchbrite the black down:
This IS what I am trying for, this is a treated receiver on top of a REAL Brand new Charter Arms stainless steel Bulldog with a new stainless steel barrel..funny but the barrel is what is not matching completely:
Lastly this is the metal polish I have been using for over 30 years.

Just blued the receiver and I have to say I'm pretty pleased, I was expecting a car crash but it turned out quite even and very very dark, charcoal I would say.
Applied it with a grey Scotch brite as suggested, pretty much saturated it and it reacted instantly, covered all over and inside then wiped off excess with a kimwipe.
Going to give it another going over tomorrow.
Would post a pic but its getting too dark here.
