Really love Syd Mead's original concept for Deckard's gun, so decided to make myself one.
Spent the last week modelling it in Solidworks and have come up with this.
Eventually planning on 3D printing it and possibly doing a run of resin kits if there's enough interest. If you're interested in seeing the design process, check out my original thread over at the RPF. http://www.therpf.com/f9/syd-meads-concept-blade-runner-blaster-221377/ |

I have just read your RPF thread, it looks amazing.
I don't think you will have a problem finding enough interest to do a run |

Finally finished the model and I have to say I'm mighty proud of it.
Hopefully doing a run of resin kits over at the RPF. Put up an interest thread and had 7 people show interest in buying it in less than 24 hours |

It's a wonderful conceptual design, but for one I'm glad things turned out the way they did. I honestly couldn't imagine all of us attempting to make replicas of this for the past 32 years. It appears to me that this weapon was inspired by this one from a bygone age..

If a run of these brilliant blasters happens, I'll design and make a custom holster for them.

That would be very interesting to see how this gun would fit into a holster If one can do it, it's you Karl! |

Rather surprised of all the interest for this
Working out with help from a guy over at the RPF how to add a working trigger to make the electronics even cooler.
For anyone interested, I'm planning to do a resin kit run, should cost around $150/£90 + P&P from the UK. Either PM me here or comment on the interest thread over at The RPF http://www.therpf.com/f75/syd-meads-concept-blade-runner-blaster-222511/

Nixon,
Nice work on the Solidworks model! It should make a nice replica. On the RPF you mention that you plan to get an Ultimaker 2 3D printer to make the parts. I'd think twice about that. As good as it is, the UM2 is still an extrusion style FDM printer. While the build layers will be very fine, they will still be noticable, especially on a surface that suposed to look like machined metal, as on a firearm. This will require a lot of surface priming and sanding of the 3D printed parts before molding. PITA, especially with that much intricate detail.
I would recommend that you consider instead having the parts 3D printed at a place like Shapeways using their Detail Plastic. You'll get a much nicer surface finish from on the prints. It'll still require some cleanup before casting but not nearly as much. (Don't use the White Strong Flexible material, it's cheap, but has a granular textured surface.)
Price the kit accordingly and use the profits to buy the Ultimaker. _________________ Dave

The ultimaker 2 has a layer resolution of 0.02mm, so 50 layers per mm. At that resolution, the layers will be basically unnoticeable. A light sanding should handle the rest |

Decided to redo most of this after seeing Morganthirteen's version. Spent a while today looking at the original concept art and my model and everything kinda clicked into place. Noticed most of the bits that were wrong and started to correct them. Tweaked the tube coming from the dome to the rear end, allowing me to space the vents further towards the edge. Also added the raised ridge across the middle of the dome and blended it in at the front and back.
