There is an obituary in The Guardian today:

What a great talent!

GIGER

Perhaps fewer viewers today knew or remember 'sci-fi' before the advent of CGI, but the recent loss of artists like Jean Giraud (aka Moebius) and now Hans Rudolf (H.R.) Giger signals the passing of an era in science fiction that launched the genre into the current age and will never be equalled in its unique contributions.

In the 70's Giger's art was as controversial as it was creative, awe-inspiring and horrific. As many experiencing this new attack on science fiction/horror, I found the work both fascinating and inspiring. And while at the time there were those who were repulsed by Giger's blending of biology and machine, it cannot be denied that his vision was truly unique.

Once discovered, a look becomes a trend and such was the case here. There have been countless attempts to "cash in" on similar designs, with a wide range of failures. But Giger's contribution to the genre through A L I E N will never be surpassed. And like Blade Runner, no sequel, no remake, no reboot will ever capture the magic of that first film. I am sad for the loss of such talents and for those here who were unable to experience it on that very first night in 1979.

Such originality is rare and their contributions will be missed.

I'm still sad about the news. He was one of my greatest artistic inspirations. This was my humble homage and farewell to him.
