Well, along the years/months, a small numbers of individuals have tackled the ultimate prop: re-create a real shooter.
Here's my list, please add or delete at will.

1. Adam Savage
2. Doc
3. Eltee
4. Riskbreaker
5. Rich Coyle

I didn't add the "Gun in the glass case" since we don't know if it's a static prop only(I'll put my money on real) or if you can actually fire it. Confused

Question: if some of you pros out there were to tackle a stubby(à la Rick Ross or Dave G.) what kind of gun would use as a base shooter?

Craig Kovach
Phil S.

Both built by Craig. I don't think he ever built a 3rd model, but I haven't spoken to him in many years.

You forgot one of the first people I know to build shooters, Craig Kovach, who built at least 2.

LOL...if I hadn't been struggling with spelling Phil Steinschneider's name I might have beat you to the punch Noeland. I had to look it up but gave up before I hit send... Laughing

Obviously not. I think Phil has been absent from the scene for a while now. I was also debating if any of these guys might not want to be on this list. I noticed he took down the section on the Metal Initiative on his site. Phil also did not create it, Craig did.

Here is Phil's website for those that don't know him... http://props.steinschneider.com/index.html

Some more info on Craig's guns here (including video of the gun firing)...

So we're at 6 people who built a shooter (2 for Craig Kovach)

1. Craig Kovach (2)
2. Adam Savage (1)
3. Doc (1)
4. Eltee (1)
5. Riskbraker (1 by a pro gunsmith)
6. Rich (1)

The "Gun in the glass case" is still a mystery (also no news as to wich gunsmith did the job) Confused
Any idea about the 2nd part: wich shooter would you use for a stubby à la Rick Ross/Dave G.?

I would wager good money on the gun in the glass case not being a real shooter.

Just out of interest, what defines a shooter, is it a replica made out of 100% original parts or is it a replica made with a bulldog that is capable of firing?

As far as I know, while Adam's and Riskbreaker's are made out of original parts, they are not shooters - in other words, while they are potentially capable - because of the build components - they have been rendered in such a way that they will not discharge.

Rich, Doc Eltee et al have made weapons that fire but they're not necessarily 100% original gun parts - so these in my mind would be 'shooters' in the true sense of the word.

Personally, I like those that are 100% built from original parts - Adam's and Riskbreakers and lets not forget DeckB26354's gorgeous real build that was done in late 2007.

I agree Mark. Some of these are missing a part that might make them unsafe to shoot, namely the barrel. The hardest part for many of these guns to get is the Steyr receiver. Doc's and a few others have a Steyr made by Richard out of pewter. It also isn't the part that would help it fire live rounds. That is the bulldog, and a relatively cheap component actually. It is also the part that makes it illegal for most to own. The LA blaster is made out of a Steyr, but we have no evidence it has a gun-smithed barrel. I doubt it it would be safe to fire considering the shortcuts with the Sidkit parts.

Here is my 2 cents worth:

Craig had real 44 barrel stock machined to make the two shooters he made.

Doc used a stock 4 inch Bulldog barrel which ended up about ½ a inch short, as gun makers cound the ½ inch of the barrel from the cylinder not from the front of the frame so a 4 inch barrel is only 3/5 ich from the front of the frame.

I have a Craig made barrel but messed it up by a misdrilled the holes so had to wait until I could have a short run of 44 rifled barrel stock machined into true 4.5 inch barrels, one when to Eltee and one is in my model.

At this time I have 5 more barrels 6 if you count the incorrectly drilled barrel that could be used in a nor firing model.

To be clear and thanks to Andy, Rich and Staar to have mentioned the differences between "real shooter" that is: same version and same/real pieces in every way possible to the actual prop and being real weapons.
There's also the "other shooters" that is: same version but different pieces (pewter/plastic, etc)of the original and capable of firing because of the Bulldog base(Noeland, I would like to hear your personal opinion on why the L.A. gun is not a shooter, since I'm still learning about the subtle differences between guns) Wink
Then there's "static guns" that is: same version and same pieces were used in every way possible to accuratly look like the film prop...but because of construction/mods cannot be safely fired.

So to resume:

Real shooters (with or without real Steyr parts).
1.Craig Kovach
2.DeckB26354
3.Doc
4.Eltee
5.Rich

Static shooters (with or without real Steyr parts).
6.Adam Savage
7.Riskbreaker
8.L.A. gun

I know that some of the guns are a mix of many manufacturer and pieces are sometimes difficult to pinpoint exactly Confused
Again, feel free to add anything to this list/discussion...always a pleasure to learn from the experts

Hi all

Thank you Staar for the compliment.

Yes, mine too is a real shooter . Only taken it out with live rounds twice but works perfectly. I have to say though, it's hard work after a few goes if you are trying to be accuarate on a target, as the thing is so bloody heavy!

I think the terms are a little confusing. How about "Authentic Vintage Part Replica" and "Ammo firing"? Mainly because the Hartford airsoft versions are also "Shooters". "Real" is also kind of an over used and non specific word.

How about using real for having a real Bulldog inside?

So a toy gun would not count as real even if it fires BBs .

I'm with Rich on that one...we're talking live rounds/blanks here folks; no BB's and no Airsoft Wink
DeckB, do you have a vid of your gun shooting live ammo?
