I have no idea what any of these ships are called, and I know this is primarily an ALIEN forum, but:

(1) if there is one thing I really like about SATURN 3 it is the more "insect" designed elements
(2) SATURN 3 is one of the more memorable ALIEN rip-offs - in what WAYS it is memorable, I'll leave that up to you.

Regardless, whether someone did a straight custom model, or say an anime variant, I still think it would be a cool kit none the less.

Here are some images of the ships in question. I will post some sketches of an alternate "anime" design later:

Patrol Ship (can't say I care for this one, being that it is typically '50's rocketship styling):

The transport has a vaguely Ron Cobb feel to it.

Gotta love the Mad Max gloves on those pressure suits.

Some... THING is wrong on Saturn 3. Shocked

Actually I didn't think it was much of an "ALIEN" ripoff... it had much more of a "Heavy Metal" euro comics vibe to it. Barbarella.

Still, a guilty pleasure. That buglike landing module was pretty cool. And I love the cruise ship at the end . Cool

Here's Keitel's helmet

Kirk Douglas' helmet.

It is on my tops list too. It is a bit too slick to be truly influenced by Alien, except maybe it tried to capitalize on the fact that Alien was a blockbuster, even though it was rated 'R' and a horror film, while most Science Fiction films were 'G'-'PG' rated especially so soon after Star Wars. I agree that it was heavily influenced by Heavy Metal magazine as well. It is also memorable in the fact that pretty much everybody else gets naked except for Harvey Keitel. Shocked

You know, looking at Douglas's helmet, I could swear I've seen a similar design in an old Heavy Metal issue. I'll have to see if I still have that one.

I'm with Steevy on that transporter: very UFO/Thunderbirds...I would like to see who was the chief model-maker on that one...Derreck Meddings maybe?

Haha...i totally missed that. Well spotted.

I must admit, i've never seen Saturn 3 but agree, that transporter looks very Thunderbirds.

Also, that Douglas helmet reminds me a tiny bit of the Airborne trooper's helmet in the Star Wars PT.

Well I checked and the effects people and production design don't seem to have had anything to do with Gerry Anderson.Ed Bishop was in the movie though(Commander Straker of UFO)and I think ITC was behind it(which did UFO and other Gerry Anderson shows).

Wish it would come out on blu-ray in the correct format. I've only seen the pan n scan version.

Wish they could have invested a little more in Harvey's ship. The chain ladder kinda kills it for me.

Not to mention the near lack of an engine.... while I really like the design, the thing is just way too small; not to mention it is interesting how they put the Hector pods into the crew cabin and they mysteriously disappear.

And I agree about it being more HEAVY METALish - then again, ALIEN is essentially a HEAVY METAL movie.

The effects company if I remember correctly was the same one that worked on the James bond movies.

You're indeed correct Andy, so it's possible that it's a Derreck Meddings company; he did the effect on Moonracker and some of the other James Bond movies also...one of the model-maker/visual effect guy worked also on Aliens.

as a kid I dreamed of having a full size hector robot from the movie. I wish there was more reference pics out there of the movie. Actually aside from the "Adam-Eve" scenario of the base, it had some pretty cool models and ships. Harvey Kietel was great. I am not much of a Farah Fawcett fan though.. I had a Wendy O. Williams poster in my room LOL! I remember a sci-fi magazine maybe Fantastic films that had a white cover with Hector and some great production pics. hmmm.. I guess being nostalgic makes one want to try to find old sci-fi mags
