BTW, I would really appreciate any valid info on the upper scope and its rings, if anybody has already identified them ?

Regarding Shawn, any info on the new version of his Nostromo gun ? Is he currently working on it ?

Fred

Hello, gentlemen. Thanks to Andy for sending me the link to this thread.

I've been on a bit of hiatus when it comes to building props over the past year, but I am in the process of gettin' my groove thing back on with this, one of my all time favorite props.

Although the STAR WARS trooper version of the rexim has proven far more popular with collectors, the Nostromo version is the one I really set out to build back when I first started. I'm currently in the process of remaking a new mold for the Trooper version, and as soon as that's done (tomorrow I should think), I'll be working on the few modifications required to make the base model for an all nostromo version. The only pieces I do not currently have in my posession are a correct pair of single point scope rings. Due to the rarity of those scopes, I'm planning on making that an all resin casting, but with a clear tip.

It should be everything I've always wanted it to be, and I'll be sure to post some photos when it's ready to go.

I'd like to close by thanking everyone who had such kind words for the earlier versions.

Shawn

Found something really interesting in an old issue of FILMMAKERS (vol 12 / N° 7) !

There's an interview of Nick Allder about his special effects work on ALIEN and one of his answers concerns the Nostromo gun, here it is :

CA : Did you create any extra-special effects for this picture ?

NA : We got very involved with fibre-optics. For instance, we took a real handgun and modified it with fibre-optics so that it became a space gun and emitted a real laser beam. We also built a little timer into the gun so we could ajust the length and duration of the laser beam, which was actually operative from 1/2 second up to 10 seconds when it was fired. You could drop the gun and the laser beam would still be coming out of the gun. And it photographed well - a concentrated little beam of light like that gave off quite a few kilowatts.

I suppose the gun he's talking about his the one handled by Kane in the egg chamber ? I'll have to check the pics of the screen-used gun to find where the timer was incorporated... if those pics available to us show this version of the working hero prop, of course ! (remember, 3 were built for the film but Nick Allder just talk about ONE gun just above)

I'm glad they finaly didn't show the gun in action, a laser beam would have looked so futuristic and weird in this very reallistic environment... (talking about the Nostromo here, not the derelict)

I don't think these photos are showing the hero prop I was talking about in my previous post (the rear section of the upper scope doesn't match the one seen on the gun handled by Kane in the deleted version of the egg opening) but thanks a lot for posting them here, Jerry ! The details are very accurate and could really help reproduce a lot of screen-accurate details on any version of Shawn Morgan's Nostormo gun... Very cool !!!

The angled shot of the scope base for the Single Point was an eye opener for me. I am working on modifying a Morgan casting right now and was just about ready to slap on a simple piece of 1913 rail (aka Picatinny) on the underside of the magwell. I'll see if I can replicate that big paperclip like base.

THANKS for the pics.

The laser-gun story is very interesting. That's the first time I've ever heard it. The only laser I recall being used is the one that covers the egg field. Was is it even possible to build a laser small enough to fit inside a prop like this back in 1977? I don't know, but I *do* know that the rexim from Bob Burn's has some noticable differences than the other one ( I have photos of the other(s) which include different scope mounts and rings, as well as slight differences in the barrell and overall paint schemes. Also, the ejection port cover is in the firing position.

I should have all the parts I was missing in a few weeks, though. And pictures will follow as soon as possible.

Maybe the laser he was referring to was for targeting?

Wait a minute, he's calling the effect a "laser beam" but he says it was made using fibre optics... (or did I missed something ?)

Since there was a lot of smoke on the sets, I suppose they could have created a kind of laser beam effect by attaching a lot of fibre optics together in the barrel of the gun and light them with a very powerful source (maybe out of the gun ?)

Shawn, can't wait to see pics of your new version of that baby (and of the "other" screen-used ones as well, if you're OK to post them here) !

Most lasers didn't get really small until the early '90s. Even back in the '80s they were pretty bulky. I think what they were trying to do with the fiber optic was to simulate a straight beam of visible light.

You can run a laser through a fiber optic "tube"/"cable" and have it come out the other end still shooting in a straight beam.

You think maybe they were going to use the same laser they had for the mist layer?

I am wondering also if he could have misinterpreted the singlepoint sight optic. It is a fiber optic that looks like a laser beam to a degree.
