Good find on the graphic markings, Jerry... an thank you too Shawn for your hard work on this prop (it's great to learn new things about it, even now with all we already know) !

Got my Nostromo pistol kit today from Shawn. It looks amazing!
Hopefully I'll have some free time to paint it up. He pretty much did all the prep work on this thing, so it's ready to paint "out of the box."
Very nice casting work and the lower scope mount is so cool. The kit includes a real Tasco scope mounted on top, too!
Thanks, Shawn! _________________ I find your lack of faith disturbing. . . |

There's an interview of Nick Allder about his special effects work on ALIEN and one of his answers concerns the Nostromo gun, here it is :
CA : Did you create any extra-special effects for this picture ?
NA : We got very involved with fibre-optics. For instance, we took a real handgun and modified it with fibre-optics so that it became a space gun and emitted a real laser beam. We also built a little timer into the gun so we could ajust the length and duration of the laser beam, which was actually operative from 1/2 second up to 10 seconds when it was fired. You could drop the gun and the laser beam would still be coming out of the gun. And it photographed well - a concentrated little beam of light like that gave off quite a few kilowatts.
I suppose the gun he's talking about his the one handled by Kane in the egg chamber ? I'll have to check the pics of the screen-used gun to find where the timer was incorporated... if those pics available to us show this version of the working hero prop, of course ! (remember, 3 were built for the film but Nick Allder just talk about ONE gun just above)
I'm glad they finaly didn't show the gun in action, a laser beam would have looked so futuristic and weird in this very reallistic environment... (talking about the Nostromo here, not the derelict)

A detail very recently caught my eye as I was watching one of SW's screen tests for AL I E N...
Look at that gun... it could be the gun Nick Allder was referring to in the interview quoted above ! Can't understand how I missed this all that time... The gun Ripley is handling looks like a modified real gun (a flamethrower, maybe ?) and its shape could easily house fiber optics, what do you guys think ?

It's too bad you can't simply buy the shell of the Baretta m12 and modify that....of course it would likely weigh a fair bit more than a mock up, but then again, I have no clue how much the new props weigh....the M12 weighs approx 6.6 lbs). _________________
