Today I started molding the pod using a method which involves 4 coats of brush on silicon and a semi-rigid urethane mother mold. Here you can see the bottom of the pod facing up ready for the second half of the mold with the top part already encased in the silicon mold and polyurethane mother mold. I will mold the first five pods for kits this week if all looks nice. I Imagine with how much we spent on this expensive materials, it should turn out sweet...

Well I can breathe a sigh of relief, I did a first casting with some old junk resin to clean out residue from the mold, and to my surprise, it made a great casting even though I was not intending to make a real part.. I was just trying to condition the mold. except for a couple slightly visible "breaks" on the fines detail, This came out great. and Bassnoir's Pod made it through it in excellent shape! I just had to re-glue one small screen detail back in place... But this smooth-on silicon even printed the screens!!!!
The way it will actually get molded is with smooth-on 327 resin, much thinner and longer work time. It will come out perfect .... I am very encouraged now!

Good stuff JT...about Smooth-On, I heard it's a tremendous product, very precise; also one has to be carefull about the quality of the piece being molded: everything will show, including the bad stuff that you thought wouldn't show up |

It is good stuff joberg! I have not tried the resin yet, but as long as it flows into the tiny detail, that will be great!.. I know my old stuff was setting up a bit to fast, and I need this to actually pick up more details ..... I imagine the little screens will come out good ha ha!!!
Here is another picture, working my way around the other side of the ship now...

Fred
PS : Alas, I can't remember where those pics came from... Any idea, guys ? (I remember I took them from a personal archive the guy you can see aside the derelict had putted online, but I can't remember his name or his site adress...)
Note : see some MUTHUR room panels on the right of photo, just above ? _________________ THE FUTURE IS A THING OF THE PAST |

I have the same photos, unfortunately I cannot remember where they came from either. Was a while ago, I haven't been able to find the site since. |

I had the same photo with the same name so I did a google image search and found this site...
http://8mm16mmfilmscollectibles.com/movie2.htm
I don't think this is where I found it before though. I don't recognize much more than a few of the Alien photos

Yes Fred. I used those photo's To model the back... and I think these are even better with more resolution than the ones I have.... Thank you very much! you can see there is an unfinished section, in the center and That photo in particular of the rear of the ship where you can see the weird curved outgrowth is exactly what I used to model the curve on the back, because I do not know if anybody had ever used this as the reference when doing the rear of the ship ... you found out my secret reference _________________ ______________________________________

Here is the first casting of the "pod" (whatever it's function is) , and joberg is 100% right. The "Smooth-On" resin is just awesome, and it picked up every detail of the prototype part. Here in this pic, I have Bassnoir's original together with Lanboy's first cast pod. I sprayed a small bit of gray primer so the details show up, and a slight bit of flash is shown as it came right out of the mold.
This technique uses a resin "skin" and rigid foam core resulting in a strong and lightweight part. In fact, the part is so strong, that if one squeezes it it feels as if were solid resin.
This Kit will be cast in this translucent amber resin color, with a rigid foam core, lightweight, and smaller solid cast details to be installed by the builder, . This part just needs a slight trimming with a razor and paint.
It will definitely be the most unique and correct ALIEN DERELICT available. I am determined to keep the price under 200 quid (GBP) (hopefully under 175 if materials cost pans out)
and the parts are a trip...translucent, solid, and you can see light right though them.
A perfect presentation for a million year old SPACE JOCKEY DERELICT.

Thank you very much guys!
Tonight I am really going for detailing based on a rare picture I have never seen that Fred
posted of what can I can only describe as another "Bridge".. I added a bunch more piping and such, and well as doing more arcs in metal wire around the top "space jockey" bridge.
I estimate I am a bit over 2/3 done now with the original. with all the conduits and whatnot I use vast amounts of ultra-low viscosity super-glue I buy online from R/C suppliers to seal the detailing to the surface of the ship so the molding will be solid. I will probably lose all my fingerprints from doing this model as much as I have been losing skin on my fingertips HA HA HA!!!!!
Here is a shot of what I am doing now...

Those grill details put this model on another level altogether (I feel for you JT: fingertips or modeling...decision, decision ). Keep up the great work!! |

Thank you guys for the positive comments!
In the last week I have been finishing and casting the components that the builder installs to the kit.
In these pics (I tried to get as close as possible and they are a bit fuzzy) I have Lanboys set of casted parts fitted to the derelict model. I added layers of mesh, tubing, piano wire and primer to try to duplicate the original studio model on this smaller scale...it is a BEOCH let me tell you, But II think as far a a derelict kit is concerned, it will be pretty awesome and I will have painting and extra detailing references included in the kit.
I have cast three sets of parts for committed builds I need to do for people, and all is left is to finish and mold the main hull (no small task)

Space Jockey says that somehow, I shall shrink myself down to minature proportions so I can fly this wonderful model. Great work. |
