I've been contemplating this origami chicken for a day or two now, so I decided to take some screencaps from available footage to try & get a better idea of how this thing is constructed. Once I started really looking, I noticed something. I then PM'd Andy to ask his opinion before I said anything; he agrees with me, that the otherwise excellent chicken replica posted in this thread is not screen-accurate.
Below, I've made a comparison photo. On the left: a screencap from a 1080i HD broadcast; on the right: a screencap from the FC Bluray; in the middle: YoshioKun13's replica. The photographic evidence shows that the legs of the screen-used chicken are on the INSIDE of the figure, where the replica has them on the OUTSIDE (let me know if that doesn't make sense & I'll try to clarify), maybe this is something that could be fixed on future pieces:
The how-to vid didn't show much, but it did give me some great ideas. ( I have some background in origami)
I feel like I've been able to fold a version that is more like the screencaps, IF I'm seeing them correctly. I know a lot of people are ordering these, & I didn't want to rain on anyone's parade without due cause, but then again, I didn't want anyone to have any false impressions either.
Here is my first attempt at the chicken:
Some adjustments definitely need to be made (e.g., thinner legs), but I feel like this is closer to what was seen on-screen. Once I try a few more things & I feel that I've gotten it correct, I'll try to post up a tutorial on how to build them. After that, if anyone wanted me to fold one for them, we can try to work something out.
Anyway, just FYI. _________________

Very impressive. I agree. The legs do look like they're on the inside. |

nice one Nexus! I've ordered the chicken from gaff, but I might have a crack at it myself if you can post a tutorial _________________ "F*ck it, it's just a movie. Let him worry about it" Harrison Ford |

Yup, legs definitely on the inside on the screen-used chicken. Good catch.
With any luck, this won't pose too big an obstacle. Maybe it will simply require folding inward instead of outward at a particular step along the way? _________________ "Your old titles mean nothing here... Captain!" |

Wow... I can finally get my hands upon the unicorn, kudos for posting it.. Im ordering one in a minute
Now, all I could want in my minor collection (to make it better & bigger) is a Rachel and a spinner
I guess I have the God of biomechanics smiling upon me . My Visa broke in two a week or something ago so I have a new one being shipped to me which troubled me when I found YoshioKun13's post. A quick call to the bank and Im hooked up to some kind of eCard (which is a tool from my bank that generates a card number and a ccv code and then I can add funds to that card). Just ordered the stuff and Im looking forward to getting my own unicorn, finally !!
Thanks once again for the post YoshioKun13 !! _________________ Nicklas Ingels / Los Angeles, 2019 Webmaster

I think YoshioKun is selling them on eBay and not the link. Those are the person he used for reference but redesigned them for size and movie accuracy.
Not that I can't have enough of stuff like that. I always use extras as gifts and trade. I will probably be picking them up from a few people by the time I am through

Oh, well.. I ordered a set from the link in one of the earlier posts, as long as I'll have an origami unicorn (looking like a unicorn) then I'll be happy _________________ Nicklas Ingels / Los Angeles, 2019 Webmaster

I think you maybe right about the paper (although I had never heard that term before ), I'll have to see if I can find some & try it. As far as a tutorial goes, it will probably be at least next weekend before I can take the time to get the camera out & do it right. But I'll get it done. _________________

WOW, thanks for those terrific high-res HD-DVD/Blu-Ray reference images Nexus6!
For the record, I never thought mine was completely 100% faithful to the one in the film. It always nagged me that I was working from grainy, low-res DVD screen caps and could never make out the details quite so well.
But now I can see the details far more clearly and can get to work on a more screen-accurate replica.
(BTW Nexus6 - Not bad for a first attempt!)

Yep, I pretty much just followed what that Japanese chap did to make his. Only with a few modifications, for instance he made the neck folds on the inside whereas I decided to do them on the outside. Seemed like it should be that way. Given what's been shown by these high-res screen caps, shouldn't be all that difficult to further modify the legs and that bottom part of the tail to be folded inside the body, rather than on the outside. It actually seems more logical to me to have it done that way.
Anyway, I'm planning on doing a video tutorial for the unicorn. If that goes well, perhaps I'll do one for the chicken too. |

OK, I went & bought some rolling papers today. You should've seen the reactions of the clerks at the tobacco store when I said I needed papers as close to square as possible, so I could use them for origami. "Origami", riiight.
Anyway, I don't have a photo, but the finished piece seems to be the perfect size in relation to my thumb. And I'll say this, folding one of these using those thin rolling papers is no joke. It easily takes me 4 times as long to fold a single chicken due to the difficulty of maneuvering this kind of paper.
Here I tried to get a backlit shot of it, but my light source was too harsh:

Wow! That's awesome, Nexus6!
Great story about the reactions of the clerks at the tobacco store, too.

I've received mine, but haven't had time to study it closely.
Although the figures are indicated to be "1:1" according to his site, the chicken does seem woefully small. The matchstick man, as others have noted, is made from a paper rather than wooden match.
Still, the main objective for most of us in purchasing this set was to reverse engineer the chicken. In that regard, a couple of members have already demonstrated striking success.
I'm looking forward to a chicken-folding tutorial from Nexus6! _________________ "Your old titles mean nothing here... Captain!" |

OK guys, I did some redesigning, & I am finally happy with my latest effort. After studying the screencap until I was cross-eyed, I'm pretty confident that I have a screen-accurate piece, fold-for-fold (where my earlier models were missing some). That's not to say that the screen-used piece was folded just like this one, but that all the visible folds are there. Also, there are some minor cosmetic differences that should improve with practice (e.g., thinner legs, shorter beak).
Also, this is my first effort with this design using the cigarette paper, so I can only assume the more I do it, the more refined I'll be able to make it. I'll do my best to get some instructions up this weekend.
