|
|
This may have been discussed here before, although I tried a few searches with no results. Does anyone here have any information about Batty (or replicants in general) being tattooed? Things you've read, heard, etc? Also, are there any other photos (or maybe higher-res) than this one:
^THIS^ is the first picture where I ever noticed them, & I am interested to know more...

Actually, I never took notice to it. I will start searching as well to see what I can dig up for you!

Sorry, For some reason I didn't collect that many pictures of naked Roy? I mostly collected pictures of the gun.
Here is a similar thread with more pics at Bladezone..
..., and a quote from an interview with RS in Starburst magazine..
Quote: | I asked Ridley Scott about the strange tattoo marks that appeared on Rutger Hauer's body during the climactic battle between replicant and blade runner. He told me that this related to another scene that was missing from the film. In the opening sequence we see (should have seen!) the replicant Roy Batty (Hauer) sitting in a space ship encased in a suit of battle armour. One by one the layers of this armour peel open until Batty is exposed, connected to his armour by a series of filament skin implants. The tattoo marks denoted the points at which the implants were attached to his torso. |
No word on this scene ever being filmed though. If it was it will surely be on the final cut, but I seem to recall in another interview that the tattoos were a last minute thing and were only meant to hint at his Bio_Mechanical function. |

EDIT: Thanks, I was just fixing to post this info...
That's what I get for not even doing a cursory search before asking. |

I've read somewhere (in a french movie magazine, I think) that the tattoos were supposed to expose/reveal the understructure of Batty's body, the way it's designed.
They appear in the very last scenes, when he's going to die... maybe because his skin becomes thinner, like in the case of very old people : their skin is more transparent, you can easily see their veins underneath. In Batty's case, the process seems to be really quick, the tattoos don't appear at the beginig of the chase in Sebastian's apartment...
They also look like acupuncture points, but it's quite the same idea...
Hope it could help... _________________ THE FUTURE IS A THING OF THE PAST |

I've heard a few things over the years.
That Batty was drawing his own star map to earth on his body.
That Ridley wanted them to make Roy look like a Mobius drawing.
That they are charts/diagrams of his battles.
Characters from a secret replicant language/alphabet.

A year or two ago, I found the guy who did the tattoos online and asked him if he still had any photos or artwork of the patterns that were applied. Sadly he did not.
The guy specializes in fake tattoos for movies and sells the related supplies that he has developed.
Here was his response-
Unfortunately we do not have any records of the tattoo. We did these tattoos just after we incorporated Reel Creations and our records of projects were slim to none. The actual process is very much the same as it was then
Except the actual products used are much more superior today.
Thanks for your inquiry. I am sorry I can’t be more help.
Regards,
Fred Blau

from Paul M. Sammon's Book " Future Noir"
pg. 188
"When asked if this interesting pattern of asymmetrical shapes was supposed to represent tattoos, Ridley Scott replies, "No. That was a half developed idea we never really cracked. You see, I've always liked what Jean Giraud, the French artist and illustrator does. His characters almost seem to be built up of varying plastic parts, with odd divisions in their flesh. I couldn't do that to Rutger though; the daily make up process would have been impossible. So we experimented with some tattooing that was supposed to suggest something like demarcations in an engine. The idea really was that they indicated an alignment to certain socket points. I'd thought that when Roy was in battle in outer space, he'd probably put on a war suit and attach plugs to that suit at those markings. But it kind of dropped away, this whole idea, and never really worked. It is interesting, though. And a curious detail."
"According to Marvin Westmore, make up artist Freddy Blau of Reel Creations ( which specializes in body tattoos) created these markings by silk screening them onto Hauer's body and then hand finishing them where necessary. The entire process took 4 hours." |

And here I thought this was to be a discussion of Rutger's REAL tattoos! I have caught glimpses of them, but nothing very clear. Any knowledge?
