OK, we're getting there.
I've ordered the chrome plated brass corners, and the bare wooden boxes are being made.
I have the badges in from Silverside.
I've ordered the leather for the lids, the screws and other hardware.
Now we're all happy with the VIN plates, I'll get them laser etched.
Phew. |

Hey Mark, you are going to hate me for that but about the vin plaques, I'm very happy and all and I realise that the shimata name is not something that can be official and that everyone has his point of view on that but I realised last night that shimata is not going to match with the bottle labels from sarednab's runs which are shimato. Isn't that a bit too bad?
I mean, really I'm totally ok with everything so far and I don't mind that too much but it seems weird to me that we are all probably going to display that box with our bottle and that the name is not going to match.
cheers and I'm really looking forward to see the first tests, i'm sure i'ts going to be great! |

EEthan.
Firstly, it's KARL. This is not the first time, or the second you've called me Mark.
No big deal, but I felt like putting it straight. I've had people call me Mark my whole life...
Secondly, The VIN plate.
I don't know how R13 feels about it, and it will be his call.
But, we've had AMPLE time to each state our case for the amendments to the VIN plate.
It was up here on the thread in concept form, in artwork form, in rendered form, and finally I paid a good deal of my hard-earned to have a hard sample laser etched.
The time to point this stuff out has passed.
If R13 wants to amend he can. But, as far as I'm concerned, we're locked. We can debate details all day and never get anywhere.
It's not unusual for company names to have several spellings: 'Weyland', 'Weylan'.
I'm fine with it. R13's call. |

oh, really sorry Karl! I'm not good with names, I should have sticked with Skin-Job
I totally get it that I came too late with my comment and it's your call and R13's to decide.
cheers |

It's totally R13's call.
It's his original work.
He'll decide what, if anything, he wishes to do.

Right,
I've ordered the leather for the tops of the boxes.
I plotted out the outline for the die to cut the foam liner. I've sent it off to the tooling company, and paid for the die cutting tool in advance. Should be ready within 2 weeks of receipt of the drawing.
This cutout will fit a tomenosuke, but I won't guarantee it'll fit any other blaster model exactly, as they all have minor dimensional differences.
I just got a request from a member on the run who has asked for their VIN plate not to be stuck on their box, but left loose, so they can place it themselves.
So, I've decided this is how they will all be delivered. The industrial double sided will be attached to the back of the plate, but the safety film left on.
That way you can stick it where you like, and there will hopefully be no further complaints. |

Today I've been dealing with many and varied 'special requests' from individuals on the list who want things done specifically for their box.
As I said right at the start, I'm not making ten different boxes.
This isn't a hobby for me, it's part of how I pay the bills. As such, there's methodology involved in the run.
The job is treated like any other that comes into the shop, and a routine is put in place to do the best work possible, as efficiently as possible.
Every time I have to take a box out of the system, it adds to the time I spend on that box, it becomes a 'project' outside of the workflow.
So, I'm just letting you know I won't be taking any more requests for the run.
We've discussed things and have a clear direction, let's stick to that.
Thanks for being understanding,
Karl |

Sounds pretty good to me Karl.
I just worked out why you call yourself "skin job".
Leather craftsman.

Ah yes, not everyone gets it.
I used to work in prosthetic makeup and creature effects, then props and models, now a niche in armoury leather props for film and TV, but also crew equipment, camera pouches, stuff crews use on set.
My company is called 'Skin-Job'. Hardly anyone gets the BR reference |

Amen. Thank you.
I've had custom bikes made, custom sneakers built from scratch, too. If you dictate every single detail to the artist/craftsman then they are relegated to just being fabricators and there is nothing that is theirs in the piece. Where's the fun in that? |

Thanks for that.
I think you guys will be happy with the final result.
Various components are on their way, the rest are already in hand.
The next step is for the die cutting form to be finished. This will take about ten days.
It's a strip-knife, or press-knife, formed and welded on jigs to conform to the shape of the supplied outline.
A cookie cutter
I use them a lot in my leather business, for stamping out components without the need to hand cut them every time. Very useful if it's an item you make a lot of.
In this case, I want the cut out in the foam sheet to be smooth and consistent. I plan to face the foam in leatherette, then stamp out the blaster shape from the leatherette and foam in one hit on a 60 ton beam press.
It should look like it was made in a factory. |

The new corners arrived today, all 80 of them
They are really nice. The chrome plating is very nce and they match the domed Steyr badge very well.
Looking good. |

Looking good!
Question about the cladding inside the case: I seem to recall that since the Tomenosukes use this oil, partly to lubricate the mechanics, but mostly to make the surface look good, they usually recommend storing the replica in a way that helps retain this oil. Reason also why they always ship the replicas in plastic bags inside their cases, because otherwise the foam they use would just soak it all up.
Is the foam used in this case of a type that would not particularly soak up any oil (whatever that would be ... a closed cell foam of some kind, I suppose), or is the die-cut cavity sealed off somehow, or will I just need to reapply oil whenever I want the piece to look especially shiny?
Which in that case raises the question -- anybody know exactly which type of oil Tomenosuke uses? _________________ 26354 |
