Here they are Quote: | THESE PHOTOS ARE NOT A RE-CREATION.
THIS IS THE ACTUAL MOVIE PROP BEING BUILT.
As I said earlier, you will have to study these photos to discover which unit this is.

Def. Mike Fink prop, no doubt. As far as servos and electronics are concerned, these have shrunk in size since 1981 and would fit the interior with elbow space left inside the machine. |

Joberg, having made one VK machine now, if you were to make another, would you make it any smaller?
What did you think of the way I scaled it off the extension? Do you think a 350mm wide machine would look too small?
Comparing my dimensions and your dimensions (useful. Thank you for those) maybe I should aim for a unit about 400mm wide!
Any thoughts...

You're welcome Colin
As for the answer to your question (well technically, it's my second V.K.), I'm not sure...one thought was that at 40cm the machine would've been too small, but then again, my big monitor is bigger than the one you posted (comparing it with the logo).
Btw, I used the screen off a portable Toshiba Mini-T.V. (model 1980).
At the time, I thought it was the right screen for the prop, but seeing the pics I think it's too big. If you look at the first pic in this post, you'll see that the first button is 5mm (I took the measurement on my computer screen) and at the same level of the bottom of the screen.
So when you stack those along the screen you'll end up with 4 buttons.
While my buttons are of the right size (1,5cm) I can stack almost 5 buttons (I'm off by 5mm to make it even) on the side.
If, by using the same pic, you put 5mm on the screen and now stack the button on the length of the machine you end-up with 27 times 5mm.
So if 5mm equal 1,5cm x 27 = 40.5cm; close to what you want to achieve as an overall length. (my V.K. fits lenght-wise in a regular Haliburton case, but not the width).
With the distortion of the pic, I think you could go up to 42 max; the arm also becomes a problem since the eye piece has to fit inside the trench on the left-hand side of the machine (when facing it).
I think the real challenge is the width of the machine and it's for that reason that they built a case for it , since the regular cases on the market didn't accomodate that off-standart measurement (my thoughts).
That's it, if I forgot something, don't hesitate to keep us posted |

Back when I was doing some early work on figuring out the correct size for the VK I used the ESPER with the VK underneath for my main reference.
The clocks, the vidphone, the whiskey glass and the braun lighter are all in the shot with the VK and ESPER and can be used to determine an accurate size.
I'll try and find my old research and see what I came up with. It might be helpful to just build 3d CG models of everything at this point and duplicate the shot to assess all the object's comparative sizes.

Thanks Nick...but the V.K. under the Esper is the U.K. one and since we've basically all agreed that everything on that one is either too big (big monitors for example) and certainly doesn't respect the original Mike Fink design in size, it's going to be difficult to calculate the size of the Esper.
As you know, there's also another type of Esper...as you can see, for some reasons, 2 props were re-worked for the movie.
One day we'll Ridley Scott on Propsummit and he'll explain everything (here's hoping). |

I still feel that both the reworked ESPER and the reworked VK are both made of the original versions' parts.
They still share enough parts to help calculate sizes. |

Yes, might as well get the Esper size by the Braun clocks attached to it or the flash head |

Finally I feel I maybe getting up to speed on this VK project!!!
Reading what Joberg and Nick said I've been taking a different approach to scaling up my VK.
Thanks for those replies. They have been helpful.
I've moved away from trying to scale it from the extension.
I've now been looking at the relationship between the size of the main monitor to the smaller monitors.
Also I've looked at things like the grey scart lead, digital wrist watch, button sizes, Tom's graphic size and anything else in those pictures that I can scale off.
Finally I re scaled my drawing to 3 screen sizes. i.e. 3", 4" and 5". Then printed them out.
In the above photo the top two both have 5" monitors but differ slightly.
Seeing them printed out has made me realise that a 325mm to 350mm wide machine is too small.
So I've come to the conclusion that joberg's machine is spot on.
My biggest width was 460mm which I think is too wide. And by looking at joberg's finished prop, (with himself included) I don't think it wants to be any bigger than 425m to 430mm. I also think now a 400mm machine with 5" and 3" monitors wouldn't look right.
So time to start again, but hopefully I can re use some of my drawing.
If I continue it will purely be a CG build for the foreseeable future.
Colin

Great work Colin, can't wait to see your first 3D renderings !

Seeing the way 3D printers are constantly improved, go figure how this project will evolve in the near future ?

Thanks Colin for the update; looking good so far. I like how you made those cut-outs to see physically how one machine was working better, in terms of size, than another.
Looking forward to see how everything is going to pan out
P.S. Your table cloth reminds me of the one my Grand-Mother had |

Thanks Fred.
3D printing is definitely a way to go. To be able to export a drawing file and have it machine made I find quite appealing. To do the VK totally in printed components would cost a lot. But to have some of the small parts done is a definite possibility. I'ts prefect for small parts like we've seen with Zora's blaster and the Snubby blasters and the parts Mike did for the MU-TH-UR box.
Joberg, I wish I had printed them out earlier. There was a moment of realization when they came out of the printer!
I'll keep you posted.

And they say that an electric razor part was used for the eye in the doc.

TFS Spinner44...you're killing me (in a good way ). I'm eager to finish my Space Station so I can get back to the V.K.
With all the pics I have, the details left to discover are fewer by the month.
If I only had clear measurements for key components I would be golden |

Hmm ... some of these images would seem to lend some support to my earlier musings on the other thread, regarding the possibility of the "bellows" mechanism being cam driven:
