Perfect, thanks Joberg... I think that could work, perhaps the correlation between the screen and housing will be a little off, I'll have to wait and see

Any ideas for the source of the metal wheels on the arm?
OR clever ideas for metal alternatives?

I reproduced the wheels myself on mine. The only mistake I made was that the rear wheel (the one close to the box and not the eye) is that it's half metal (the groove holding the cable) and half plastic. You could always look at Stephen Dane's pics, it's very detailed.
Or you could try to turn those in metal (alu) by one of our member? |

Ahh! So the rear could theoretically just be 3 discs put together?? That would make it easier...
Hmm, when I get the correct measurements down, getting them machined on a lathe would be awesome! Great idea! Think I will l
By the way: New main display with better dimensions!

They look like they could be camera mount hand wheels. You can get them in many looks but only a couple standardized sizes. You would find them on tripod mounts and flash attachments etc... |

I wouldn't go that far Anders. A simple alu-wheel with a plastic cover would do. Did you see the Stephen Dane vid?
Video of the eye is the bomb btw |

What size screen are you using for the main display? |

It's a 7" display. A bit on the large side, but with more accurate dimensions (NOT widescreen). I'm aiming for the this front, which justifies the larger main display:

The wheels look like belt wheels from a VCR or tape recorder. Even similar to ones on a turn table.

I've been keeping my eyes open at work for this type of thing.
I've seen a few types on camera and grip related equipment as well as on lamps. Desk lamps to be specific.
The first one is from an offset camera mount for a dolly.
Second is tightening wheels for the matte box.
Third is a lamp. The brand is stamped on the arm.
I think the lamp option is closest to the VK. Considering how many lamps and lamp parts were available to the prop builders, it would seem likely that they borrowed a few parts back and forth.
Flash mounts and tripod mounts have similar wheels that are cheap and worth looking in to.

BC-RX on therpf has posted a vid showing parts of the Ridley Scott Exhibition in Nothern England. In the first few seconds, you can see a V.K. machine on display. Seems to me that it's not the screen-used one (L.A. shoot) nor the one they re-shot in the U.K. with transformed screen (which is suppose to be in SRS London office)...Thoughts? |
