Rich, I don't know what was your calorie intake (or what kind of diet you were used to) but generaly, with a reduced or drastic level of calories, the body tends to go on a "survival/famine mode" that keeps any food stored into the fatty tissues of the body. That's why the weight isn't going anywhere yet.
To trick the body out of this mode, you'll have to eat very small meals (everything should be half the size of your fist with a 40% protein, 40% carbs and 20% fat) at least 5/6 times a day and on an average of every 2 hours. Hydration is also important and whatever you do, no carbs (simple sugars) before going to sleep (carefull on the sodium intake as well).
But I'm sure that you have already a diet given to you by your physician and later on you'll probably have an excercice routine developed for just you.

Sorry to hear that Rich. You are indeed the Blaster Master, not only because of your great work but your contribution to the BR community. Rest up and hope you get your health back soon.

I was think that might be the problem, the body will use muscle BEFORE fat it it feels a famine.

Thanks.

Rich

I plan on reporting how things come along with my recovery and I am fully able to answer questions and offer my opinions.

I can only echo everyone's sentiments when I say "thank you for all that you have brought to the hobby", especially as it pertains to BR. Having personally done business with you on a few occasions going as far back as 1999, I can also say that it has truly been a pleasure doing business with you and watching your work continue to raise the bar to new heights. I wish you as speedy a recovery as possible and look forward to "hearing" from you again in the future.

And i thought my blood pressure of 186/100 was high!

Luckily it's now being controlled by med's. I think that most people consider health as a given, when in fact, it's not. Monitor this stuff guys!

I don't own a blaster, let along one of Rich's, and now no one will probably be able too. That's sad, but nowhere near as important as Rich's survival.

Good luck!

Tony

That does sound high..

I was maintaining around 140 over 70s and it did not save me.

Thanks everyone for the kind words.

I would write my memoirs, but I have covered almost everything on my web site already..

Rich

Some follow up on how I am making out.

FYI I have not been able to sleep in a bed, other that the hospitable beds I was in during the post operation in the hospitable and even then I had to have the back as high as possible.(and I was pretty doped up as well.)

Once home I have had to sleep in my recliner and up until now again nearly totally vertical.

The problem is all the fluids left in the chest, when I lay down they put pressure on the heart and the lungs. I get pain and cannot get my breath.

My Doctor put me on stronger diuretics yesterday and I have already lost 2/3 pounds of water. He said this is very normal and I will be passing this stage soon.

I hope to sleep in my own bed by the end of this week.

So until then I sleep only when I am so tied I fall asleep sitting up at any time, so it is a couple of hours at a time and then I have to get up and work stiff and hurting body.

The bright lights of being a live and with hope of good recover are now dimmer and now I face the less painful but longer road to recover with diet and works outs.

Rich

One day at the time Rich, that's the only way to do it. Small steps=small victories. Since your body has experienced and is still experiencing trauma, it's trying to repair itself one step at the time (with the help of meds and other techniques of course).
Each patient is different of course, and the recovery process also. It could be months/years before you'll come back to normal or near normal and you'll have to adapt fairly fast to those permanent life-changes.
It's difficult at the begining but not impossible: change is always hard, but you'll see that you'll have no choice but to give your best in order to lead another kind of existence.
Remember, it'll take the time it takes, not less and not more Wink

I don't have as much time to check the boards as I used to, so I just saw this thread.
Rich, I hope you have a good recovery! I've been proud to display one of your blasters in my BR collection for years.
It's a gorgeous piece and it will always be one of my favorites.
Eric

Rich, I just checked the board today and saw this thread. I am sad to hear you are retiring, but glad you are, as we say, "on the mend".

I know it's tough, and you will understandably feel down, but hang in there - it will be worth it. You're a true artist, and you have many, many friends here.

All the very best to you.

Progress report:

This week was a little harder.

Seems I now have to adjust my meds.. been getting side effects and problems.

Have to see my Doctors again for some testing and adjustments.

Also trying to get set up with Cardio Rehab which can run 2 to 4 months.

Friends I wish I could say how to avoid this problem but there is no real answer…

Rich

There's always a certain amount of tweeking involved and as a prop maker Rich you can understand that the body is a complex machine and that individuals are also unique; therefore, what works for one might not work for the other.
I know it sucks right now to have to try and experiment with meds, or other tricks of the trade, and not have the results. In medecine, you're the patient and as the word implies you'll have to be...well, patient.
Hang in there, at a certain time it'll get better for sure.
