I guess this qualifies as building a prop, so I'll post it here.
After spending way too much time checking eBay for this and failing to find anything that approaches the actual appearance of the "prop", I took Rick Ross's suggestion and decided to make one myself.
Of course, it can not be absolutely perfect and there's no reference for "the dark side", but guessing on a rough size based on its surroundings, it's probably fairly close. Once cast in resin and cleaned up (and with a little paint) "Daffy" should cook up just fine . . .

Wow, I tip my hat to you sir. I have hunted on the bay for many a year looking for the "right" one with no luck. Well done.
If you decide to do a run, I'd be most interested. _________________ Hollywood is the only industry, even taking in soup companies, which does not have laboratories for the purpose of experimentation.

Brilliant idea. I am sure there will be interest for a run of these as well.

That's looking great!
I had a similar idea when I got mine. Except to start, I bought one of the antique ones (that was as close to screen-accurate as I could find), & then modified the crap out of it with files, sandpaper, & plumber's putty, until I was happy with it.
Watching your build with great interest... _________________

Thanks Six!
Your thought occurred to me as well, early on. But as with Panaflex, after shopping with no luck and then the potential cost - in both money and time, it seemed best to start from scratch.
As I said, it won't be perfect, with only a couple of frame grabs of one side as reference, but hopefully the result will be "close".

From looking at my antique one, I could see these being painted flat black or dark brown and then hit with bronze Rub n' Buff. You might even be able to do a single part silicone mold using the base as the pour.

I'm probably going to cast this in two pieces - the body and base (hollowed) and a base plug. That way it can be filled with pellets to give it a little added weight.
As to the mold, good suggestion Andy, BUT with the undercuts (it's more or less an hourglass shape) that may result in the mold getting torn or just not lasting as long, if that would work at all . . .
As to the finish, there are several approaches - but I may cast it in a darker shade to skip a step.

After conferring with Mr. Ross (who was kind enough to share some valuable info), I may try casting these with a resin I've not used before - Smooth-On® "Onyx" - a black resin that might lend itself well to the bronze finish. That, or add a dye to the more common resin to approach a brown color.
I'll have to test it once I finalize the detailing of Master Daffy. - R13 _________________ Gosh, you've really got some nice toys here . . . |
