I think that with the base you had (and the obvious lack of quality)you did a good job...maybe a mat paint could've mask some of the imperfections.
As for the "cow-boy" look, I think that it adds to the BR World to have many variations on a theme  |

The base is, I believe well-suited for an "all-black" version.
