I do have to say something here, I know Prometheus is getting a little panned at the moment, but I think looking beyond the complaints, this movie, true to Ridley's sci fi offerings of the past, is going to roll and roll and roll regarding discussion. |

I don't think I could really compare to be honest; they are both very different books with the one concentrating purely on the concept art.
But, I love this new one, great book. |

Totally agreed. As time goes on I'm liking it more and more. I'm hoping to get back to the cinema again over the weekend, reallly want to see it again. |

Sir Ridley Scott.... you rule, great to see they went back to the original concept designs from the book Giger's Alien. I hope that hollywood does not make a sequel, its nice to have an after-thought on the evolution of the alien (with what DNA it takes from its host) and fits well into the (big) universe of the first three movies.
What came first...? The Xenomorph or the Egg? |

Friends and I came to consensus easily at C minus.
There was way too much wrong then right with it and
the crew of idiots doing stupid things didn't help.
It was painful and even laughable their behavior that
killed any emotional investment in them or gave them
any reality as trained professionals. The android
was really the only one I thought was interesting or cared
about which is ironic.
This review pretty covers what we thought...
Review: 'Prometheus' is a Visually Stunning Epic Failure
http://www.forbes.com/sites/daviddisalvo/2012/06/11/review-prometheus-is-a-visually-stunning-epic-failure/
Despite all that, the last events in the film were the most interesting and perhaps a sequal can deliver something of more substance.
I won't write it off yet. |

I'm sure I'll get flamed for this, but aside from the stunning cinematography, I thought it was a pointless load of rubbish. Disappointing and gross. Only my opinion of course, but it will be awhile before I begin trusting Ridley again ... |

I totally agree with both posts above mine.
Actually the more I think about Prometheus, the more I hate it.

Well, back from the movie theatre...and I like it very much (saw it twice in a row actually).
I think you have 3 camps in here:
1) Hated the movie: vacuous characters, plenty of major gaffes from the crew/scientists and it's not an Alien prequel, etc...
2) Loved the movie: great visuals, plenty of unaswered questions and mystery, etc...
3) Liked it for visuals, 3-D is really great, but some of the plot holes couldn't be overlooked and the end is too much, etc...
I think the people who hated the movie thought: "this is the story that will explain how the Alien we know (and like) will come into life and how it's going to be all tied-up with the first movie."
It is not
This is a stand alone story that has many possibilities: Alien is one of the possibilities but not an end onto itself.
I don't need to describe to you, members of the board, what Alien was all about (as a story, but also style).
SRS always said that it was made as a Hitchock film: many players, one assassin and one unlikely survivor.
Prometheus is not like that at all! Weyland paid for the mission, they got the team that made the research into the hyeroglyphics found in many different countries. They aren't cosmonauts, nor military trained; they are scientists...eager scientists who will make mistakes because they're curious (and sometimes stupid; ask anybody: they don't necessarily have social skills like you and me many times they'll do/say pretty bizarre things just for the fact that their thinking process takes the better of any logical thoughts you and I would have in this situation: see a strange animal (serpent-like)on a different planet and I would probably flee not knowing if it's friend or foe.
Not scientists and certainly not the biology specialist in the movie that actually wants to touch it: it's his job and his career to study strange species! The other guy is in it for the money and for the rocks (says the geologist early in the movie).
And not to spoil it for others who haven't seen the movie yet I'll stop here |

The fact that it was not an Alien prequel per se, had little or nothing to do with my critique. |

Right or wrong, we expect perfection from Sir Ridley. Everyone is going to either like or hate what he has given us. That said, it is far better than 98 percent of the drivel Hollywood passes off as "science fiction" or the vast majority of the repeated "reboots" and retreads than are being shoved at us. For all it's flaws (agreed upon or not) it is still more original (even with it's possible similarities to the original) and I don't think any one can argue that it is spectacular in it's design and cinematic scope. However you see it, enjoy it for what does offer - I doubt anything else in the genre this summer can or will touch it.

I very much enjoyed this movie. The 3D Imax was a cinema experience I wont forget in a long time and the 2D confirmed my appreciation for the rest.
Fassbender/David is wonderful and would even go so far as calling it a contemporary science fiction landmark. _________________ Formerly offworld66 |

Same here.
Related or not to A L I E N frankly I didn't care, I just wanted to see a GREAT film, not a poorly crafted (on too many levels) film, or whatever you call that mess.

It's art and so a subjective thing.
In another 30 years people may look back and say "Prometheus" was ahead of its time and there'll be a parade of Hollywood hacks lined up to remake it.
While it may not be perfect, it's the very rare film that is. I'm glad Ridley is still able to navigate the system enough to make his kind of films in an environment that rewards the mediocre.
No easy task considering that the people heading up major studios aren't filmmakers anymore. They're spreadsheet jockeys concerned only with box-office. They could be overseeing microwave oven assembly plants... _________________ Hollywood is the only industry, even taking in soup companies, which does not have laboratories for the purpose of experimentation.

I just got back from my third viewing of Prometheus and here are a few random musings/opinions from seeing it again.
1) Holloway is a complete dick - he's constantly calling David 'Boy' and during the champagne scene, he's downright nasty. Sure it could be the alcohol but there's something about this character that I just don't like. David seems actively happy when he's infected, it almost seems like revenge.
2) Vickers behaviour seems to stem from her jealousy of David, and her feeling of resentment towards her father for never loving her. She wasn't even supposed to be on the mission, as Weyland is surprised to see her, but she must have come along for some reason, what would that be? She doesn't seem to stand to gain any personal reward from such a dangerous undertaking, so perhaps she's there as one final attempt to force her dad to see that she's worth something.
3) Still on the Vickers situation, when Janek asks if she's a robot. Given the above, and her feelings towards David, this must have been a very hurtful accusation....accusing her of being the one thing that has robbed her of a father. In my opinion, she chooses to sleep with Janek to prove her humanity, and there might be a slight perverseness in sleeping with the captain whilst her dad lies totally unaware just a few feet away. Rubbing his nose in it perhaps?
4) A lot of people have moaned about Fifield and Millburn in the pyramid, and why the captain didn't track where they were. The simple reason is that the storm was playing hell with the holomap information. The captain was asking them for their position, and updating them with anything new - watching this whole sequence again made more sense than the critics are suggesting.
5) The Lawrence of Arabia scene was in 3D - it never occurred to me that the filmakers would have had to do this post production lol |

I saw this film on Fathers Day with my brother whilst his wife and daughter amassed a huge dinner for us at the Wigley Home. the film looked amazing... that was a given. I did not see it in 3d. Maybe the second time. Lots of religious inferences i found... loved the timing of the 2000 year bit. I surmised that The Messiah to Israel was a Engineer pet project meant to put their creations back on track, and we killed it. Guess we pissed them off. LOL i have ONE thing to say about Vickers being squished like a bitch-bug. SERPENTINE!!!!! All in all i enjoyed it as much as the parts of Avatar i have seen. Amazing to look at, but as reminder that i am no longer the hopeful teenager dissecting each scene to figure out how they did that and how i could replicate it on Super 8.... peter pan has finally grown up. _________________ I've had people walk out on me before, but never when i was being so charming |

My biggest criticism of the film may be that it lacked real inspiration, and was pretty much stuff I have seen elsewhere in one form or another, but the exact same thing was said about Alien in 79, as much as to be sued by the people who did 'It! The Terror from Beyond Space'...Siskel and Ebert thought it was just a "Haunted house in space". It was also criticized heavily for "Cardboard characters". The film was successful for a few reason though. First it employed real artists for the visual inspiration (something not really done for Prometheus), and second it created a believable alien world that was fully fleshed out, and you could absorb yourself into. This is also where Prometheus succeeds in my opinion. There were times watching that I felt like I was in a space flight simulator.
I agree that the dialogue and character development was not done so well, but it didn't bother me as much as it may have others. I did have some issues with Rapace's character being a little hard to accept in my mind, but my biggest issue was with Theron. Her character and death scene was almost an add on to the film, and a bit hammy. She started off as an almost hyper version of Ripley, with GI Jane thrown in, but in the end never had a moment of redemption, even though you began to understand her motivations, she just stayed a typical misogynistic "evil bitch" stereotype. A real reversal to what Ridley did in the first film. I would have liked to see her become one of the protagonists at the end. I am not sure if it is a "Greedo shot first" moment though, but it is a reversal of position, albeit in a new film. A shame really.
Still the saving grace of this film, is David. I would watch this film repeatedly just for Michael Fassbender's performance and philosophical questions he poses. Loved every scene he was in. In the end the movie may have been more about him anyway.
