No joy. The scanning equipment couldn't quite accommodate the 16-inch tile and the router was a desktop model. No chance.

DaveG - once you created the 3D file in Rhino, what software did you use to router it out on a CNC machine? We're using MasterCAM X1 to create the POST file and using TechnoIsel to actually router the projects on our CNC machines. We have Da Vinci stepper & servo CNC routers that will do small projects, and a Da Vinici router in our woodshop that will router a full 4'X8' sheet of plywood. I was just curious as I know there is a lot of different equipment and software available.

I exported the model as an stl file from Rhino. Then used V-Carve Pro from Vectric to create the G Code from the stl file. I use Mach 3 to read the G Code and run the machine.

Here are some 3D printed versions of the Ennis Tile at 1/6 and 1/12 scale.
A closeup of the 1/6 tile.
And a closeup of the 1/2 tile.
A very cool by product of this printer is that the material is translucent. Here's what the tiles look like when backlit. First the 1/6 tile.
And here are a cluster of four of the 1/12 tiles.

The machine was an EOS 3D Printer. It uses a laser to sinter, or melt, a nylon powder, layer by layer, into a solid form. Shapeways has one of these machines. They call it "White, Strong and Flexible". Because this is a powder based technology, the finished surface has a very fine 'tooth' or roughness, almost like that of a sugar cube. For things that need to be very smooth, like the parts of a blaster, this is not so good. But to represent a concrete tile, it's perfect!

Those look outstanding Dave! I am a little curious about the scale though. They look a little large since I was under the impression they original tiles were 16" wide.

Nope, they're exactly the right size. 1/6 of 16 inches is 2.666 inches and 1/12 of 16 inches is 1.333.

And now for something completely different...
I've modeled a ring using the tile pattern. Above is the computer rendering. It's been sent to Shapeways to be 3D printed in stainless steel. Not sure how well the fine detail will come out with this process, I've only ever 3D printed the plastics before. Well see...

| Very cool idea ...the possibilities are almost endless; people have a tendency to want a cube made out with the tiles, how about a vase type?...round and made out of smaller tiles all-over it Or the same tile design but elongated (hight) or flatten? |
