Lets just hope they don't @&$% it up
Lets just see what they do with Prometheus.I think a new blade runner movie can be judged by how well they pull of an alien prequel.
My only thoughts are that I think the new Blade Runner movie will have none of the original cast,a completely new story line and outlook and hopefully explore a rich vein of philosophical musing as the original did,but once you have explored the nature of life, death and what makes humans, human where is there to go....Just a thought.

Can you say The Phantom Menace or Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
As much as I would love to see an awesome sequel, especially considering all the major players are alive and look good enough to be in it I am afraid it will be utter crap.
Ridley ain't got the greatest track record. Some awesome stuff mixed in with a lot of garbage. I mean let's be honest, the same guy who made BR and Alien, and Gladiator (Minus some major prop problems in Gladiator and the world's worst bad guy), also made the latest Robin Hood, Hannibal, and a bunch of other junk.
Just leave it alone. |

The film has a very long way to go before it's any kind of real. It's an exciting notion, and I'm happy that Alcon is trying to do it right. Good for them. But I'm going to keep a reserved excitement here. Until a solid writer is working on it, or until Scott is on set, it's difficult for me to geek out over this one.
What are the odds they hire old school model builders?

The old school model builders are still alive and fairly well I believe...Heck, he could re-hire almost the entire crew if he wanted to. |

Ridley went out of his way to have sets and models built for his Prometheus film. So I am feeling better about this already.
Still, no matter how good of a crew you got starting a film, it will need that spark of inspiration that will drive it and make it come to life. Long time directors often work more off of experience and instinct, than new ideas, and this could make both these films look like retreads of his own work. So it is right to stay cautiously optimistic, but I am sure it will at least be better than most of the crap out there now, no matter what, just because of Ridley's high standards.

Phantom Menace, Crystal Skull, The (new) Day the Earth Stood Still. All artistic and/or critical flops, IMO. I wish "they" would leave it alone. Right now a lot of you are probably thinking buzzkill. That's okay, it's only my 2¢ anyway …. |

The first two already had shown that successful sequels can be made from those franchises. The third I never saw, so I can't comment except for it looked like a commercial reinvention of the original film, and had nothing to do with the original creators. Remakes pretty much always make me disappointed. But, I have been waiting allmost 30 years to visit this world again, and to me that is much of what this movie is to me. A place I like to visit, but would like to stay at a different hotel and see some other sites there. Lucas pissed us off because he took our beloved childhood films and made them for today's children. I have a feeling this new film will not become the classic the first one is, but I am sure there will be something I will like about it. Especially since they are aware of the potential for them to alienate us if they screw it up.

Your 2¢ is a important as anybody else's.
You can't possibly be as cynical and critical as me when it comes to the last decade or so of sci-fi/fantasy/speculative fiction/superhero/whatever movies. (The Matrix included). The praise heaped on Christopher Nolan (for example) leaves me perplexed and quite angry.
If anybody has the right, then its Ridley, so what the hell?
These prequels/sequels are inevitable. Now they have a fighting chance. |
