I am finally "finished" with my 2011 Coyle kit buildup. I'm not going to do full WorldCon weathering with all the gouges and scrapes as I did on my v1 Tomenosuke, but my goal was to get this as structurally close to the actual prop as possible. I am going for the look in the pre-production photos.
Anyway, I probably did every single part of this in the hardest way possible.
The thumb release actually works, which was a lot more work than I expected. I also drilled out all the holes and replaced all the brass pins and rod with aluminum/steel.
Included an actual weaver scope knob, a real binding post, larger cap head screws and significantly reshaped the rear half of the side plate.
I also used brass tubing to connect the Steyr receiver cap to the bolt, as is on the actual prop. The cylinder arm is bolted on with a separate bolt from the trigger guard, whose bolt got moved down a bit. The buttplate features the off-center top bolt hole.
The Steyr mag is held in place by an earth magnet. The board I used to mount the electronics lifted the battery too far up for it to fit in the mag well properly, so it's point-to-point soldered.
The front post tube is a 5/8" spacer I got off eBay. Fit perfectly!
The grip strap was...got it all sanded down, got everything fit together, drilled out the big hole, painted it up, and when I put it together again one side of the hole cracked. It's very solid all assembled, and you wouldn't notice until you were specifically looking for it (I put in JB Weld and touched up the paint), but Rich isn't joking when he says to leave that and removal of the spacer on the back of the Steyr 'til last.
And here it is with the needs-to-be-repainted side screw:
And here's the look I was going for:
Lastly, thanks to all the usual suspects - Rich for the kit, Karl for the reference, and Andy for the stand.

Excellent WORK...work being the operative word. Ive never tried to build up a prop weapon, although Ive done scale models for 40+ YEARS.
Again...OUTSTANDING JOB!

Thanks, everyone. This was a buildup purely for the fun of doing a build-up. While it was much more work than I expected, I thoroughly enjoyed building it. |
