A few years ago I started building my own VK machine and posted pics of the shell I was working on in the old group project thread.
The build fell by the wayside as other projects took precedence, but I always intended to come back to this when I had the time and the enthusiasm to dedicate to a major build like I did with last years Alien tracker build.
Thanks to the great new reference on Propsummit, it's now a bit easier to see what's what with this amazing prop.
I've considerably reworked the shell, built the top twin monitor shell, and vacformed some pieces for the bellows assembly, still need to trim those back, but it's beginning to come together.
I need to completelely rework the back details, but here are some progress pics. Unfortunateley my vac-former is not big enough to form the main shell, so I'm gonna have to outsource that.

She's really getting there this time
Rebuilt on an aluminium frame, I've combined elements from the LA & London versions.
The main build, secondary monitors and 'eye frame' are pretty much done, aside from some small detailing and clean up.
The buttons on the front will be made from laser-cut acrylic, painted white and lit from behind.
I still need to make bucks for the main convex CRT screen, that will then be vacformed from clear plastic. When the build is slush cast , the screen guide can be cut out and the vac-screen inserted from behind.
The bar leds on the top of the monitor and on the front panel create random led patterns when hooked up to 9v, the fitting holes will also need dremeling out of the resin cast case.
The panel led bar will sit behind a clear acrylic section, which you can see on the botton pic.
Next up, the eyepiece and arm...

Agreed, a terrific build. Looking forward to following your progress.
High regards

It's been a long time coming, but here are the final pics of all the final parts that are going to be sent off to distant shores for creating moulds for the final kit.
The blue parts and the badge clear acrylic laser cuts which won't be moulded, if I do any kits to sell, these will be cut for each kit. These ones are going off with the masters for my moulding guy's own VK. He's also doing the buttons on the front, which will be clear then painted white and lit from behind.
Polymer bucks for the monitor screen vac-forms are also pictured, gun for scale. That's it. I'm free!

Having spent the last few years working up the emotional courage to go back to this thing, I am working again on finishing the beast. The whole moulding thing was a total clustercluck. I won't go into details, but as Joberg also found, trying to reproduce something like this is just financially inviable for a home prop builder.
Anyhoo, sorry about the crap pic, cheap phone. Will take and post proper pics when it's all done and dusted

So cool that you're back to working on this, been eager to see your progress...
I started on a similar project with working screens and all and found some ok solutions... But I just had to come to terms with the fact that I do not yet have the skills needed to build this prop _________________ Monsieur, azonnal kövessen engem bitte |

Looking good Birdie...yes, this is not a easy prop to build. As for me, I'm comfortable building it; it's just that those screens and the electronics behind all of that is scaring me to death.
I have a few projects after the 2001 Space Station and I'll revisit that V.K. Machine for sure! |
