I'll be 40 in November and my back is starting to fall apart as well. After 20 years of standing on my feet 10-12 hours a day as a cook/chef, I switched to academia to teach hospitality and food production (now mainly sitting most of the time).
My last job was working in a 400-seat BBQ running the smokehouse. Two of us smoked 5,000 pounds of meat a day 6 days a week. Needless to say, lifting all those boxes of meat without a back brace was extremely stupid.
One day in 2000, I was in the walk-in fridge throwing 70-pound boxes of beef ribs on the top shelf and I twisted to the left and that was it - out for a month. It was also the end of my chef career and I went back to college.
About two to three times a year, the old injury "re-activates" itself and I can't walk for two days (numb legs and the lower back totally seizes up). I didn't herniate any disks but I wonder if it's solely muscular (like the doctors said) because my lower back "pops" and "cracks" quite a bit.
I've been reading your posts and wonder if it's just inevitable that it'll get worse. I've consulted with doctors and they give me the usual exercises and stretches to do but I'm looking more at the long term.
Anyways - my sympathies - sounds like my woes are nothing compared to yours!
Take care,
Dave |

I had micro surgery on my back for sciatica about 2 years ago. I had it going down both legs. It got so bad I couldn't stand up, and couldn't walk without crutches. Even with cructhes, I wasn't really walking. I also started to have nuerological damage, and I still get the shakes from time to time.
My back took some time to heal, but it was really only weeks. I went back to work after 2 weeks. I still have problems once in a while if I have to look straight down, like I'm looking at my feet kind of thing. That can give me shooting pain.
I thought sciatica was ther worst pain I'd ever felt until I had a tooth break, and slice into the nerve. That was literally a blinding pain that brought me to my knees, and felt like someone had just ripped open my head. I even began to scream, and found myself unable to stop screaming. The pain had just taken over.
Thankfully about 4 hours later they pulled the tooth.

Ouch.
So far mine is not that bad.
Hope never to do that.

It's Rich's thread, he can derail it if he wants. |

Well since we are not getting back on topic and are not being guided back onto the initial topic, we might as well talk about his freaking back again. |

I have made posts about the blaster.
I also have not been talking much about my back problem.
I have answered others whom are having problems and I have taken some of these answers to PMs to keep them off this thread.
IF I have helped any one else with back problems I am glad.
I damm near crippled my self, I pinched a nerve real bad, it cost me over two months and I am not recovered yet. I still limp and my legs are still weak.
It has cost me many sales.
It may yet cost me my home.
Happy yet, ??

A reply to this thread got put in incorrectly as a new thread, was meant to go here.
Some how in my misguided way I seemed to have started a thread.
Please remove that thread a"Control Problem".
I was trying a light hearted posting about how I was trying to turn this thread back onto the subject but it was not answering the helm.

Oh!...now I get it
Well I got helm control back and got rid of the rogue thread, so full speed ahead.
So how is the Metal Wordcon version coming? Any progress pics yet? |

My question about the Metal Worldcon blaster is do you have an extra one of these little doo-dads lying around that you would want to part with? (Replica or otherwise)
Thanks,
Dave

Yes soon, I am able to sit for a couple of hours at a time before forced to cold pack and rest of an hour, so it is now two on and one off.
I have all the parts and I am fitting and finishing them.

If you can drill and place a screw into it or simply glue it on, yes.
If you need a screw on back I need to build my first run and then see.

Thank you very much for the offer (I've spent about $50 on two 344 scopes already with worn-down/unusable knobs).
I can drill and/or glue - no screw on back needed - I really appreciate the assistance!
Thank you!
