Ive wanting to add an ALIEN style Egg to my AES suit display. The ones Ive seen offered are very pricey so I figured I would just make my own. I thought some here might like to do the same. Seems like its a pretty straight forward sculpt so Ill post pics of my progress and my materials used so anyone can follow along and make their own.
This is a list of materials Ive used so far:
1)Large Balloon available through local Party Galaxy. Cost $4 (I'll pick up another and post pics)
2) A couple rolls of 2" masking tape. $3 ea.
4) Cloth fiberglass 3 packs $4 ea.
5) Fiberglass resin. I bought a gallon at about $35.
6) Mixing bowls and several paint brushes.
First, using a compressor to save my lungs, I inflated the balloon. I didn't fully inflate it so that it would have some give.
Second, I wrapped the center of the balloon with the 2" masking tape. This process allowed me to shape the balloon to more of an egg shape.
Once I had the center wrapped, I then covered the complete balloon with masking tape to add a bit of strength and help prevent the balloon from bursting, which did happen on the first attempt. Be sure to do all of this on a surface that doesn't have any sharp areas to puncture the balloon.
The following pictures are of the balloon covered with tape and the basic shape.
The next step was to coat the entire tape covered balloon with fiberglass resin. I balanced the balloon in a box and did one end, let cure and then the other end. I then covered the entire balloon with fiberglass cloth and more resin:
Next step will be to mount it to a flat surface and begin adding the details.
More pics as I progress on the project.

Yes I want it to have the tentacles as this will act as a base.

That is a very novel idea! I'm trying to think of a corner in the house that could use an Alien egg _________________ Wait; I'm having one of those things! You know; a headache with pictures? |

Every Corner!!
Im thinking of doing these 2 ways when done. One rotocast in white thats paintable and a second thats resin fibgerglass which will be see-thru enough to add lighting inside. I figure someone with some inginuity can add something that will move about and create a similar effect as when Kane first encounters the egg.
Ill get a bit more done on Sun when I have another day off. Pics to come.

Ok a few updates:
The egg(balloon) complted. I cut the bottom off to mount it to a level surface:
Now mounted onto a flat surface.I then outlined the top so that I had an idea where I would add the clay sculpt to form the top:
The top sculpt in progress. I used water based/air dry clay for this. I wasnt sure which way I wanted to go with this. The ALIEN egg is pretty plain. The ALIENS egg has a bit moe detail. I like the model egg included with the Dallas and Kane figures so I modeled my sculpt after this example:
Adding texture:

Funny you said that. A neighbor stopped by yesterday. I have this huge sculpt sitting on my kitchen bar. He walks in and says" What the hell is that thing"??!!
I said" We find these growing in the field past the barn from time to time".
He believed me!! It was hilarious the look of shock on his face!
