Small update on the tire.
Yesterday i machined these two suckers. Hardly believe it, but they took the entire day to machine with a tiny bit. Each is about 16mm wide and 32mm long. 28 of them make up the center rim of the tire. To speed up casting them i machined two for the mold.
Today i have been machining the inner part of the tire (inner as in closer to the center), and will continue tomorrow with the upper part, so that's coming along nicely.
I'll have a nice big update with lotsa pics around the weekend, to round things out.
Cheerioh.

Thanx guys. Both of you make exceptional models, so it means a lot coming from you.
Update on the tire pattern:
I machined the inner half of the tire (in pic on left) from renshape. It doesn't look very fat, but it's 2 inches thick. To position the 28 sections that make up the outer profile, i machined two styrene circles with 28 steps so each casting locks nicely into the next.
On the top of the pic (bit out of pic) is the rear ladder, and the toplight frame on it's glue spacer.
I'm now machining the outer ring of the tire. The one that connects the renshape inner ring with the 28 castings. I wanted to machine just two (one for each side of the tire), but the estimated machining time was way too long. So i'm doing one quarter, and will use 8 castings of it to complete the wheel.
Here's the quarter section on the bed. Estimated machining time is more than 9 hours for the high resolution i want it in.
Cheers,
Wasili

Wasili,
the work your putting into this APC project is fantastic !! ,do you mind my asking two questions, well three really , what machine are you using to produce all these fantastic pieces- as I want one!
are you going to do any interior ? ( radio control would be ideal for this beast - with servo controlled turret!)
and finally are you going to offer it as a kit or fully built ? |

Thanx Jo and Jt !! Finishing this up is the main goal of the moment.
And hi John, good to hear from you.
The machine i've been using for this is a Step Four Basic 540 ( www.step-four.at ) from Austria. But i have to stress that any cnc machine can do this. As long as your pre- and CAD work is up to specs. No drawings, no cnc machined parts.
Although tempting, i'm not doing any interior. The interior set build for Aliens was way bigger than the real APC vehicle used for exterior shots. Not to mention the fact that everybody was sitting in places where there's supposed to be large wheels and wheel wells. The real driver of the APC vehicle literally had a few inches of space in front of his nose, with his head against the bulkhead of the wheel well. I could do it, and only show what one would see through the front window and main access door, and cheat like they do in the movies to make it fit. But only if someone commissions me to do it.
And RC is tempting as well. But i leave that up to others.
I have already opened pre-order sales for both a kit and a finished build up with LED lighting. But so far the sales have been a tad mellow. I'm sure this is partly due to the fact the master is 99% complete (only missing the tires at the moment), and people off course would love to see finished products. That and i'm taking my time rebuilding the whole thing. After sales started, Harry Harris generously jumped in with excellent new reference resulting in a complete rebuild of the whole model, adding more details than i knew where present from my old ref.
I'm sure in a week or two, when i can show the final model, i'll sell a few more, but for a subject this popular i expected more. Feel free to jump on the bandwagon, there's a sales thread here and on the RPF. This thread please only for build ups.
Tata,
Wasili |

Here's some pics of parts i haven't shown yet.
The upper side wall of the tire after machining, sealed with a priming filler and sanded.
Machined another main turret, here's a comparison with the new bottom one (left) and the old one (right). Included a hole for the axle pipe. The pipe also functions as a pouring entry for the rotocast turret.
Didn't want to waist material, so used the old turret part for something new, in this case the wheel rim.
Rim after machining, before priming filler, and adding the bolts. This is the inside of the rim, not visible for the 2 front wheels, but it is visible for the 2 rear wheels. The rim pattern does not have a hole for the axle, this is added after the part is cast.
Brass handles. From left to right: 2 x top of turret, 2 x top of roof, 4 x rear light. I made a template, so the folded handles would be the same.
New main turret aft barrel. Old one on left, new one on right. Quite a difference in length. It's also a tad wider.
Nose turret barrel base. Here still with one (out of eight) brass barrel.
The eight holes in the barrel base look like they are spaced evenly.
But actually it's 4 groups of 2 holes.
The new noseturret. Old one on right, bit out of pic. I noticed the part looks a bit different (wider) when using the good ol' eyes, instead of my camera. The two barrels are tacked on with a piece of tape, as they are cast seperately.
More soon.
Cheers,
Wasili

Hey folks,
It's a bit of a mad time, so a quick reply here. Thought you would like this pic of the parts that made up the troubled tire. Wheel hub casting on right.
I have overall pics up of the kit parts over the weekend. Working out the glitch with the tires, but i'm not giving up.
Cheers,
Wasili

Great job there mate! Yeah...funny how a model can sometimes have a complicated part/piece that suck all your effort and time trying to make it right |

Thanx Jo, i'm sure the part will look the part when it's done. I feel it's worth the effort, but yeah, it did suck up a lot of time.
Here's a not really spectacular update, some castings of parts for the production run. Many more done, just lacking the time at the moment to post.
More next time.
Cheers,
Wasili

Thanx a lot guys.
Btw, haven't said it before, but absolutely love what you guys are doing with your models, the derelict, the airlock and the landing strut. Wowser.. Keep 'm coming.
Here's two quick shots of the tirepattern. I've got access to an industry vac casting chamber, and can use it from monday onwards. Should be interesting.
Cheers,
Wasili

That's it Wasili, you did it! I actually had tears in my eyes looking at that marvelous wheel ...tears of joy of course, just WOW (I wish I had the machines and the materials to go to the next level in my model-making (thanks for mentioning my airlock and the landing gear ).
Keep up the good work! |

Yes I second that statement , it's absolutely fantastic ,can't wait to see it finished , I am seriously thinking about R/C ing one as a project - so it mean's I'm going to have to buy one soon. |
