|
|
Hi, this is my first time posting!
Im not sure if its aloud but i have been working on a Blade runner spinner model, but in 3D! I have been working on it for a few months now and have been running a blog about how i have progressed with the modeling procedure. Would appreciate it if any one has any comments, so far i am up to modeling the interior but i lack decent reference images. Perhaps some one has some good reference images i could look at?
Any way here is my blog
http://mattroework.blogspot.com/2009/07/sketching-out-basic-body-mesh.html
Here is a quick and rough render of the interior so far! more images can be seen on my blog
http://img101.imageshack.us/i/niceinterior.jpg/
Many thanks, and sorry if i have posted this in the wrong place! |

Welcome Matthew --
As a guy who has worked in CG for over 25 years, I must congratulate you on great job. Not only have you done the complex design justice, but I sincerely appreciate the fact that you have taken the time to share your work with the rest of us..
I hope someone here is able to help you with the reference material you need..
Cheers and good luck _________________

DUDE.
And I thought I had it tough when I 3D modeled my spinner in Second Life's building methods. It has 1/50th the detail yours has. I'm extremely impressed!
Be sure to tell us where to get this when you're done - I'd love to examine every detail for hours, and find a way to view it with my TrackIR5 so I can get lost in geek escapism for a bit.
Awesome work dude.
Edit: Also, welcome to the site! _________________

Thanks again guys for your comments, very much appreciated.
I have a question. I remember watching the special features on the blade runner set and noticed that the original spinner design was to use a similar steering design seen in the picture added. But i also heard that the actual system that was designed made the spinner 'car' very had to manoeuvre. Did they settle for using a simple steering wheel when the spinner was filmed in motion?

Cheers

I think IIRC that the drivable car was refitted with a steering wheel (small custom chain link style) after a crew guy crashed it with the other steering system. It may have been seen in the movie briefly, but I am not sure. All the other versions had the grip style steering handles as far as I know and can tell.
Another thing to remember is that they used the same interior for the ground car for filming close-ups so it can be used for reference too.

I have a quick Update,
Its still kinda rough, missing some buttons and possibly some detail to the control panel etc, and textures... but its getting there. I have shaded some of the model to 'what I believe is the correct colours, materials etc' from what I can see from my limited references. If any one has any critique or suggestions for an alternative colour or material to be used please say!
Hmmm one thing I noticed was the chairs themselves. From dvd and still images I have noticed the chair appeared to be made from black leather. However I have also found images of the mock up spinner, possibly used to film close ups or possibly used in the background traffic. to have a slightly beige, Swede color to it. If I can I want to stick as close to gaff's spinner which appears to have black leather seats. Not sure if any one has an opinion on this?
Also, I noticed the side door sections appear grey within some shots of the film, but are blue in the mock up spinners, as well as pretty much every model I have seen of the spinner. Would this be down to Gaff's spinner being created uniquely to individual shots? Or would his spinner of been made uniquely to his character?
Render so far of the interior cockpit. Quite dark.

Render but with a pinkish orangey sky. I have added this render as it helps increase the brightness of the lighting but also gives the model some standing and feeling of place.

#edit: i have uploaded a better compressed render.
Please any critique or suggestions feel free to say!
Matt
p.s sorry for the lack of quality on the renders, it seems when exported as a j-peg and then uploaded on imageshack they loose a lot of quality

That is insane!!
Love it.
IIRC, the scene where Deckard goes to Sebastians, when he's in his car it's actually the interior of a spinner. Not sure whether you've used that as reference or not but thought i'd mention it incase you hadn't.
Keep up the great work! |

Excellent!!!
from these references the side door is blue! hmmm awesome, these images are a great help!

Matt
p.s very sneaky of them, to use a spinners interior for the car scene. I can see why tho, im glad you pointed that out i wouldn't of noticed myself. |

Matt: I haven't touched 3D modeling software in quite some time. When you finish the model, will you be releasing it or just using it for a bunch of screenshots. I'd love the thing itself. If it's the former, what software would you recommend as the easiest to open a file such as yours to view? _________________

Control Panel Update
I had difficulty nail down a definite reference for the control panel, so iv used some artistic license along with the limited references i had. Hope iv done it justice. The same goes for the back board, i think just adding buttons and gizmos kinda sells it. For the colored buttons iv used a similar design to deckards key card. Hmmm at the moment the buttons are kinda translucent so possibly the detail is hard to pick out. Might change this at some point.
